Combo products as single line items: Combo products have rapidly become PickyStory’s most popular type of product deal. This deal can have a huge effect on your average order value (AOV) – you can see examples of brands finding success with combo products here and here. Basically, combo products allow you to sell several products as a single item in your store.
Group several products together, then display them on a new, dedicated product page where your customers can add all items to the cart with one click. Often, combo products can be the difference between selling one product to your customers, and selling three or more instead.
We’ve enhanced our combo product functionality with new options when it comes to how to display your combos products in the cart. Previously, a combo product containing three individual products would be shown in the cart as three separate line items. Now, it can be shown as one.
Read on to get all the details on this new feature.
Let’s take a look at an example of a combo product:
As you can see, this combo contains three shirts, all with different SKUs. Here’s an example of how that looks in the cart using the default settings:
Here, we see the combo product split or “exploded” into three separate line items. Importantly, the shopper is able to modify the quantity of each of the individual products, as well as remove products from the combo.
Now, let’s see how it looks when we add combo products as single line items:
This time, the combo product is shown as a single line item in the cart. You can also see the breakdown of the individual product names, but they all fall under one umbrella product – the combo.
In this case, the shopper is unable to modify the quantity of each of the individual products within the combo, or remove any of the products without removing the entire combo from their cart.
Choosing how to display your combo products really comes down to your use case, and whether you want your customers to have the option of modifying the components of the combo, or whether you would prefer to essentially “lock” the combo product once it’s added to the cart.
For example, perhaps you are selling combo products of home gym packages. If your customers aren’t familiar with your products, or what they need to build a home gym, you might create a one-product package that contains everything they need – a rack, bars, weights, plus all the accessories and assembly parts. In this case, you could have a combo that contains 20 or more products, but it’s possible that your customers want to opt-out of a few of those.
If they’re just getting started, they might not need the heaviest set of weights you have included. In this instance, customers might be more likely to purchase the home gym package if they know they can opt-out of the products they don’t really need and aren’t paying for something unnecessary. Therefore, keeping each individual product as a separate line item in the cart might be the best option in this scenario.
Alternatively, consider if you are using combo products to sell gift boxes in your store. Your gift box might contain the box itself, some bath salts, a bottle of wine, and some gourmet snacks.
If these are already pre-packaged gift boxes ready to sell (and not built to order), you can’t have customers removing a product from the gift box when they get to the cart. In this case, displaying combo products as single line items in the cart is the better option, so that the combo is purchased exactly how you had created it.
In both scenarios, customers can choose the variants for each individual product within the combo when they are on the product page. The specific variant chosen is displayed on the cart page as seen in the examples above, and also on the checkout page.
Regardless of whether you choose to display your combo products as single line items in the cart, or to list out each product individually, inventory tracking works the same in both cases. Inventory is tracked for all of the individual SKUs added to the combo product.
If you create a combo product containing products A, B, and C, then when a customer purchases the combo, 1 each of products A, B, and C will automatically be removed from your product inventory. Similarly, if any of products A, B, and C are out of stock, the customer cannot purchase the combo product.
Also, the individual SKUs are shown at checkout, which means there’s no confusion when it comes to order fulfillment – you know exactly which products you need to include in the order and aren’t just looking at a “bundle product” SKU.
In some legacy accounts, this feature has not yet been enabled. If you don’t see the option below, contact the PickyStory support team via the chat button inside the app. Otherwise, here’s how to choose which way to display your combo products in the cart.
1. In the “Deal group” section, navigate to your combo product deal group:
2. Click on the combo product you wish to edit:
3. In the “Conditions” section, toggle on/off the “Single cart line item” setting:
Note that this setting is not global – it is applied to each combo product individually. Therefore, should you choose, you can easily display different combos in different ways depending on your needs.
Combo products were already an amazing feature that provided amazing results for merchants across a wide variety of industries. This new feature takes the customization of combo products one step further, and is ideal if you are looking to sell pre-packaged gift boxes or other pre-defined deals.
